Awesome was not disappointed!
I just thought this was so cool to get and play with because it has all of those really fun retro games from our childhood. Of course, the young kids don’t know a lot about them, but it’s a really great way to introduce your kids or grandkids to games that were popular some years ago. That’s so amazing how many games this thing holds because it has quite a few games on here. Like a lot! It’s very easy to operate and figure out how it works and it’s awesome to have maybe in your purse of the car for a road trip or just to give it to your kids when you are grocery shopping and waiting at the doctors appointment. This is going to keep them tied up and fun for a couple hours.
I'll start with the hardware. The screen is fantastic. Huge, great color, bright and clear. Much bigger than other similar type handhelds I have like this. Slight light bleed at the bottom edge, but not enough to be distracting. The speakers, loud and clear. The joysticks feel OK and the buttons on the face (A,B,X,Y) feel acceptable. The shoulder buttons however are not great at all. Rattly and very awkward positioning. To use all the buttons normally, you have to hold the device in a strange way with your wrists touching each other, sort of how you would mime holding an open book. It works... but not ideal. Not a problem for the older games that don't use those buttons, but you notice quickly with newer games. If they just angled the buttons differently you could hold this like any other controller. The volume buttons are also not easily pressed. They sit flush with the body and are kind of a pain to use. Would have much preferred a volume dial or slightly raised buttons. On the software side, it includes a lot of games from many of the classic consoles and handhelds. Most of the older stuff runs flawlessly (NES/GBA/Genesis era), but you can feel the device starting to struggle with the more modern consoles (N64/Dreamcast). With stuttering audio and slow frame rates. Also many if not most titles have no box art preloaded. Being open source, you can add all of this yourself, but it takes a little extra work. Games are easily added and removed by plugging the included SD card into your PC.Kind of pricey compared to other options available, considering the subpar button layout and the need for further configuration, like fixing button mapping on some titles and having to add box art. That being said, it is a lot of fun and a great trip down memory lane for those that grew up playing these old games.
